Laying the Hearth Fire Brick even with a Concrete Counter Top

Hello. I am new to BrickWood Ovens and this is my first attempt to build a pizza oven. I am going to be building this pizza oven in conjunction with a fireplace. My question is, is it possible to use concrete instead of the brick for the boarder on the hearth? I will be using concrete countertops on the BBQ island I am building as well as on a small countertop separating the fireplace from the oven. I think pouring concrete on top of concrete would be ok but any advice/thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Jon

Yes - Several builders have done just what you are looking to do… BUT - it will need to be a thick pour as you will need 2.5" minimum for the firebrick height and 2" minimum for the insulation layer under the firebrick brick hearth.

2.5" - Firebrick
0.5" - Sand base / fire brick leveling sand
2.0" - Perlite / Vermiculite Insulation layer (or) Ceramic Fiber Board

You MUST have the insulation layer as a block between the hearth fire brick and the concrete slab - otherwise the concrete will suck the heat right out of that hearth firebrick like a sponge! And you’ll soon be contacting us saying, “Why doesn’t my hearth get to 900 degrees?”
