Hey. I did my first layer of stucco but it took 2 of my 3 bags and now I can’t find more stucco in my area (Michigan). My question, can I do a 1/2 inch layer of mortar over my stucco? It will eventually be veneered. Thanks for any help. Really hoping not to have to remove the stucco and do all mortar…
As long as you are applying a veneer to the top of that mortar, you will be fine. My very first Mattone Cupola build, I used mortar. While is was considerably heavier and not as easy to form, it worked in a pinch. And since you are applying a veneer over that mortar, you will be okay.
I need to make sure I stress that you seal your masonry oven once the exterior of the oven is dry (or mostly dry) so water does not seep into your masonry work. Seal your oven once a year w/ a non-toxic masonry sealer and your oven will not only look great, but you’ll be preventing future repair due to water damage.
Seconding @BrickWood ‘s advice. My “stucco” shell is made entirely of Type S mortar. This material is cheap and available at any big box hardware store.
While it’s not quite as easy to form, a damp masonry sponge is your friend and will bring up the grain. You want that for your veneer, so that it has a surface on which to grip.
And just so we are clear, do not remove those two bags of stucco mix!
