Hey all - Not sure if I’m allows to ask the question here but I’ll try… Here is a pic of my progress on firebox and oven. As you can see, the firebricks are non symmetrical and look hideous. Looking for suggestions on how to fix this…
Of course you’re allowed to ask this or any other on-topic question here…that’s what these forums are for. Glad you asked.
Presuming you are talking about the arch of the Mattone Barile, you absolutely do not have to worry about it. The insulation and stucco called for in the instructions will cover up the exterior shell and are where you need to focus on crafting a smoothly curved surface. I presume you are planning to do a final veneer using more of that gorgeous stone we see on the other structures.
The interior of the arch has taken the shape of the foam form, so the “reveal” (arch margin that remains visible after you install insulation and veneer) will look symmetrical when you are done.
You used appropriate amounts of mortar, and you may notice that some of it “oozed” through the joints inside the oven. We recommend you do not try to grind that off. If you are super-bothered by the ooze in the facing brick around the opening—which again is the only part that will be visible once insulation and stucco are installed—you can either work very carefully with an angle grinder to reduce the face, or bring your veneer down over it. Take care if you opt to grind because firebrick are relatively fragile.
In general I do think you’re going to be very proud of this build once you’re done. It looks like a real showpiece!
